Ben Vitale, Principle of Architecture firm Vitale Designs, talks about the use of natural materials and evoking feelings from a design.
Hi Ben, can you describe your initial passion and drive for the Architecture and Design Industry?
This started from a young age working with my father, an electrician, I was on building sites most afternoons and weekends assisting him, I would enjoy watching how a building was put together and the interaction of the builder and tradesman with the architects and designers. The most exciting part was watching the designers and architects direct and orchestrate the buildings outcome and the pleasure that was derived from this.
How has the industry changed since you started out?
The accessibility of special, bespoke and individual items (one off’s) that make our projects truly special, that are located around the world seem easier to access. The world seems smaller and closer now, and design in Australia seems to be contributing on the world platform.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My Grandparents – Moving from Italy in the 1950’s, my grandfather a prisoner of war for 7 years, and grandmother raising 4 kids on her own in a foreign country tendering a large farm and selling produce, they successfully set up a new life in a new country with no language or education and they still managed their lives with a sense of lifestyle and enjoyment.
What is your design philosophy?
Design must respond, however for me designing space must be more than ticking boxes, it must inspire feelings.
What has been your favourite project?
We have had a number of great projects, however a stand out would definitely be our Quarry House on the south coast. This was a very exciting and inspirational project.
Can you describe your ultimate bathroom?
Teak silver decking underfoot, a warm balmy breeze with the sound of crashing waves in the distance, rinsing off after a dip under naturally aged large brass rain head…
What has been the best highlight owning and running Vitale?
Having your clients tell you that the space / house that you have designed and brought to life is the most amazing space they have ever lived in!
